Body Composition

A 12-week, double-blind, quasi-randomized, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Coleus forskohlii (Forcslim) on body weight loss.

TL;DR

Forcslim (Coleus forskohlii extract) demonstrated significant anti-obesity effects including reductions in body weight, waist circumference, and improvements in lipid profile, suggesting it may serve as a safe and effective alternative to synthetic anti-obesity drugs.

Key Findings

Forcslim supplementation produced a significant reduction in body weight compared to placebo over 12 weeks.

  • Body weight reduction was -1.93 kg compared to placebo (p < 0.001)
  • The study was a 12-week, double-blind, quasi-randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial
  • 60 overweight subjects aged 20-70 years were enrolled
  • Participants were assigned to receive either Forcslim or placebo

Forcslim supplementation produced a significant reduction in waist circumference compared to placebo.

  • Waist circumference was reduced by -1.83 cm compared to placebo (p < 0.01)
  • Significant improvements in anthropometric parameters were observed exclusively in the Forcslim group
  • Body mass index (BMI) and body composition were among the key outcome measures assessed

Triglyceride levels were significantly reduced in the Forcslim group.

  • Triglyceride (TG) reduction was statistically significant at p < 0.01
  • Lipid profile parameters were assessed throughout the 12-week study duration
  • The reduction in triglycerides was observed in addition to improvements in anthropometric parameters

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels showed a significant increase in the Forcslim group.

  • HDL levels showed a significant increase at p = 0.001
  • This improvement in HDL occurred alongside significant reductions in triglycerides
  • Lipid profile improvements were assessed as key secondary outcomes in the trial

Forcslim demonstrated a favorable safety profile with no clinically significant adverse changes observed.

  • No clinically significant changes were observed in metabolic markers, liver enzyme levels, or muscle enzyme levels
  • Heart rate and blood pressure showed no clinically significant changes
  • No clinically significant adverse effects were reported by participants
  • Safety markers assessed included metabolic, hepatic, and cardiovascular indicators throughout the study duration

What This Means

This research suggests that a standardized extract of Coleus forskohlii, a plant used in traditional medicine, may help overweight people lose weight and improve their metabolic health. In a 12-week clinical trial with 60 overweight adults, those taking the Coleus forskohlii supplement (called Forcslim) lost nearly 2 kilograms more than those taking a placebo, and also reduced their waist circumference by about 1.8 centimeters more. Blood fat (triglyceride) levels dropped significantly, and 'good' cholesterol (HDL) levels rose significantly in the supplement group. Importantly, the supplement appeared to be safe based on standard medical tests. No meaningful changes were detected in markers of liver health, kidney function, muscle health, heart rate, or blood pressure, and participants did not report notable side effects. These safety results suggest that Coleus forskohlii extract was well tolerated over the 12-week period in this population. This research suggests that Coleus forskohlii extract could be a plant-based option to support weight management and cardiovascular risk factor improvement in overweight individuals. However, it is worth noting that the study used a 'quasi-randomized' design rather than fully randomized allocation, and the sample size was relatively small (60 participants), so further large-scale trials would help confirm these findings.
