Body Composition

[Effects of different aging years of Liupao tea on metabolic indexes and body composition of overweight and obese people].

TL;DR

Drinking Liupao tea (6 g/d for 3 months) produced significant lipid-lowering, blood pressure-reducing, and body composition improvements in overweight and obese individuals, but there was no statistically significant difference in effects between one-year and seven-year aged Liupao tea.

Key Findings

LDL-C cholesterol levels decreased significantly after three months of Liupao tea intervention.

  • LDL-C decreased by 0.21 mmol/L (P<0.05) after the 3-month intervention.
  • HDL-C cholesterol level increased by 0.05 mmol/L (P<0.05).
  • Total cholesterol level in subjects with abnormal levels decreased by 0.34 mmol/L (P<0.05).

Blood pressure in subjects with abnormal levels decreased significantly after three months of Liupao tea consumption.

  • Blood pressure decreased from 138.6/82.3 mmHg to 123.4/77.4 mmHg (P<0.05).
  • This reduction was observed specifically in those subjects who had abnormal blood pressure levels at baseline.

BMI decreased significantly following the three-month Liupao tea intervention.

  • BMI decreased from (25.4±2.9) to (24.8±2.7) (P<0.05).
  • Subjects were overweight or obese individuals recruited from communities in Haidian District, Beijing in March 2024.

Body fat mass decreased and muscle mass increased significantly after three months of Liupao tea drinking.

  • Body fat decreased from (21.5±4.9) kg to (19.7±4.6) kg (P<0.05).
  • Muscle mass increased from 40.3 (37.1, 46.4) kg to 40.7 (37.2, 47.0) kg (P<0.05).
  • Other body composition indicators such as protein also improved.
  • Body composition was measured using the IOI353 Body Composition Analyser.

Anxiety symptoms improved significantly after three months of tea drinking.

  • Anxiety symptoms of subjects improved after 3 months of drinking tea (P<0.05).
  • Sleep and appetite were measured using internationally common scales before and after the intervention.

There was no statistically significant difference in health effects between one-year aged and seven-year aged Liupao tea.

  • Subjects were randomly assigned to either a one-year or seven-year Liupao tea aging group.
  • No statistically significant difference was found in the effects of different aging years of Liupao tea on metabolic indexes and body composition.
  • The intervention dose was 6 g/d per person, brewed with 250 mL of boiled water for 30-45 seconds each morning.
