[Knowledge of weight management among Chinese school-aged children in 2023 to 2024].

TL;DR

Chinese school-aged children demonstrated generally good knowledge of weight management, but boys, rural students, and those in central and western regions had relatively lower mastery, with knowledge related to healthy food choices remaining the weakest across all stages.

Key Findings

The overall weighted correct response rate for weight management knowledge among Chinese school-aged children was 83.97%.

  • 95% CI: 83.83%–84.10%
  • Data drawn from the 2023–2024 China Nutrition and Health Knowledge Survey
  • Survey covered 195 survey sites across 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities
  • A total of 90,240 students from upper primary (grades 4–6), junior high, and senior high schools were included
  • Multistage stratified cluster sampling design was applied with Taylor linearization method for standard error estimation

Female students had significantly higher weight management knowledge correct response rates than male students.

  • Female students: 85.68%; male students: 82.49%
  • Difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01)
  • Group differences were assessed by t or Wald F tests based on the complex sampling design

Senior high school students demonstrated the highest level of weight management knowledge among the three educational stages.

  • Senior high school weighted correct response rate: 86.21% (95% CI: 85.96%–86.45%)
  • Compared to upper primary (grades 4–6) and junior high school students
  • Knowledge level increased progressively with educational stage

Urban students performed significantly better than rural students on weight management knowledge.

  • Urban students: 85.44%; rural students: 81.48%
  • Difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01)

Students in eastern regions scored higher on weight management knowledge than peers in central and western regions.

  • Eastern region weighted correct response rate: 85.80% (95% CI: 85.59%–86.00%)
  • Central and western region students scored lower, though specific rates not provided in abstract
  • Regional differences were assessed using complex sampling design statistical tests

Students showed the highest mastery in the knowledge domains of 'physical activity and sedentary behavior' and 'dietary misconceptions'.

  • Weighted accuracy exceeded 88.00% for both domains
  • These were the strongest knowledge areas across educational stages

'Healthy food choices' was the weakest knowledge domain, particularly among upper primary and junior high students.

  • Upper primary students (grades 4–6): 70.15% (95% CI: 69.75%–70.54%)
  • Junior high students: 70.75% (95% CI: 70.29%–71.20%)
  • This domain was the weakest across all educational stages

Items related to 'avoiding fried foods when eating out' and 'making healthy dining-out choices' were common weak points across all educational stages.

  • These specific items had notably low correct response rates across upper primary, junior high, and senior high students
  • Both items fell within the 'healthy food choices' knowledge domain
