Oral nutritional supplement compliance among hospitalized cancer patients: a cross-sectional study based on the KAP model.

TL;DR

Compliance with oral nutritional supplements in hospitalized cancer patients was significantly associated with social support, adverse effects, and knowledge, suggesting nursing staff should offer personalized health education plans that enhance nutritional knowledge, strengthen social support, and improve self-efficacy.

Key Findings

The average KAP scores for ONS compliance among hospitalized cancer patients were moderate across all three dimensions.

  • The average score for knowledge was 38.61 ± 7.21
  • The average score for attitudes was 25.36 ± 3.48
  • The average score for practices was 38.39 ± 6.22
  • The study included 127 hospitalized cancer patients at a tertiary hospital in Taizhou, China

Adverse effects, knowledge, and social support were all significantly associated with ONS compliance practices.

  • Adverse effects were significantly associated with practices (β = 2.85, P = 0.03)
  • Knowledge was significantly associated with practices (β = 0.24, P = 0.01)
  • Social support was significantly associated with practices (β = 0.11, P = 0.01)
  • These associations were identified through multiple linear regression analysis

Educational level, social support, patient satisfaction, attitudes towards ONS, and family financial burden were associated with ONS knowledge.

  • Multiple linear regression analysis identified these five factors as significant predictors of the knowledge dimension
  • Educational level was among the sociodemographic factors associated with knowledge
  • Family financial burden was identified as a determinant of knowledge scores
  • Patient satisfaction with care was also significantly linked to knowledge

Self-efficacy, knowledge, and family accompaniment during hospitalization were associated with positive attitudes toward ONS.

  • Self-efficacy was measured using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES)
  • Family accompaniment during hospitalization was a significant factor in the attitudes dimension
  • Knowledge scores were positively associated with attitudes, suggesting a knowledge-attitude pathway
  • These associations were identified through multiple linear regression analysis

The study used the KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices) model framework to assess ONS compliance determinants in 127 hospitalized cancer patients.

  • An online questionnaire was administered during face-to-face interviews at a tertiary hospital in Taizhou, China
  • The questionnaire included sociodemographic information, an ONS compliance assessment scale, and cancer-related variables
  • Self-efficacy was assessed using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), quality of life with EuroQol Five-Dimensional Scale (EQ-5D), and social support with the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS)
  • Statistical analyses included independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analyses, and multiple linear regression analyses
  • Of the 132 patients initially recruited, 127 were ultimately included in the study
