Physical activity and social adaptation in high school students: the chain mediating roles of interpersonal relationships and psychological resilience.

TL;DR

Physical activity was associated with social adaptation in high school students through both independent and chain mediation effects of interpersonal relationships and psychological resilience.

Key Findings

Physical activity was positively correlated with social adaptation among high school students.

  • Sample consisted of 1,093 high school students in Henan Province, China.
  • Students completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-S) and the Social Adaptive Capacity Diagnostic Scale.
  • Data analysis was performed using SPSS software and the Process plugin.
  • Data visualization was carried out using RStudio.

Physical activity was correlated with both interpersonal relationships and psychological resilience.

  • Interpersonal relationships were measured using the Interpersonal Relationship Comprehensive Diagnostic Scale.
  • Psychological resilience was measured using the Adolescent Psychological Resilience Scale.
  • Both mediators showed significant correlations with physical activity.
  • The study used N = 1,093 high school students to establish these correlations.

Interpersonal relationships independently mediated the relationship between physical activity and social adaptation.

  • The independent mediation effect of interpersonal relationships was identified using the Process plugin in SPSS.
  • This represents one of two independent mediation pathways identified in the study.
  • The sample of 1,093 high school students from Henan Province, China was used for this analysis.
  • Students completed assessments in their classrooms.

Psychological resilience independently mediated the relationship between physical activity and social adaptation.

  • The independent mediation effect of psychological resilience was identified using the Process plugin in SPSS.
  • This represents the second of two independent mediation pathways identified in the study.
  • The Adolescent Psychological Resilience Scale was used to measure this construct.
  • The mediation analysis was conducted with N = 1,093 high school students.

Physical activity was associated with social adaptation through a chain mediation pathway involving both interpersonal relationships and psychological resilience sequentially.

  • The chain mediation model tested the pathway: physical activity → interpersonal relationships → psychological resilience → social adaptation.
  • This chain mediation effect was identified in addition to the two independent mediation effects.
  • The Process plugin was used to test the chain mediation model.
  • The study highlights interpersonal relationships and psychological resilience as mechanisms of the association between physical activity and social adaptation.
