Hormone Therapy

Satisfaction associated with gender-affirming hormone therapy.

TL;DR

Most transgender individuals reported high levels of satisfaction with gender-affirming hormone therapy, with 95% of participants satisfied and emotional well-being improving markedly when treatment was provided as part of comprehensive biopsychosocial care.

Key Findings

The majority of participants reported being satisfied with gender-affirming hormone therapy.

  • 95% of participants reported being satisfied with GAHT
  • 75% noted an improvement in the 'perceived problem solution' domain
  • Satisfaction was measured using the Spanish adaptation of the received treatment satisfaction scale (CRES-4)
  • Study included 83 subjects: 52 (62.7%) transgender men and 31 (37.3%) transgender women
  • Participants had been receiving GAHT for >1 year and had not undergone genital reassignment surgery

Emotional well-being improved markedly following gender-affirming hormone therapy.

  • 68% reported an acceptable emotional state after GAHT, compared to 9% before starting treatment
  • This represents a substantial increase from baseline emotional well-being
  • Participants were recruited from a Transgender Medicine Unit between January 2014 and January 2023

Satisfaction with GAHT was not significantly associated with several clinical and demographic variables.

  • Satisfaction was not significantly associated with treatment duration
  • No significant association was found with psychological comorbidity
  • Age at initiation of GAHT was not significantly associated with satisfaction
  • Non-genital gender-affirming surgeries and type of hormone therapy (feminizing vs. masculinizing) were also not significantly associated with satisfaction

The study population had a relatively young age at initiation of GAHT with moderate treatment duration at time of evaluation.

  • The median age at initiation of GAHT was 19 [17-25] years
  • Median treatment duration at the time of evaluation was 3 [1.75-4] years
  • This was a cross-sectional observational study
  • Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS-V-23
